A wheelchair user might be surprised to learn that getting around in Kentucky is as easy as getting around on foot.
The state is known for its great roadways and wide range of recreational and commercial opportunities, but one of the most exciting things to see in the Bluegrass is the emergence of a new generation of people who have found the state more than just an easy way to get from point A to point B. “People are finding it really, really easy to get in and out of places and it’s great,” said Katherine Ellington, a wheelchair user and avid outdoorsman from Lexington, Kentucky.
“It’s just great to have a vehicle that is able to get you anywhere.”
Ellington has used her mobility scooter since she was a child.
Now that she’s out of her wheelchair and into the 21st century, she’s determined to make the transition easier.
Ms Elling, like many wheelchair users, is used to using a wheelchair and using a mobile app, such as Ride, to make sure she’s always connected to a vehicle.
She said the app is also great for keeping in touch with friends and family, as well as being a great way to stay on the go and avoid long trips.
But when she started using the scooter, Ms Ellingston’s mobility scooters were a little out of date.
She was frustrated that her scooter wouldn’t be able to park on the side of the road, so she started looking for a replacement.
Eventually, she found the Vesta Mobility, a scooter that is capable of driving up to 20 kilometres a day and is also wheelchair accessible.
Eligible for the Vella Mobility Scooter program, the Vexas scooters are designed for people with mobility issues, such a spinal cord injury or a congenital condition such as spinal stenosis, and are available for rent.
The scooters have a full range of motor controls, from a single wheel to two to four wheels, and a rear-facing camera.
They also have a wireless charging system and a range of options for when you want to take the scooters on a hike or to take a leisurely ride on a bike or scooter.
A wheelchair user using a scooters’ battery can recharge the scotch or beer bottle at home.
“[The scotches] are so easy to ride and have a great battery life,” Ms Elington said.
Vesta Mobility scooters can also be used to transport the scooters on a road trip or by car.
Eligibility for the Scooter Assistance Program, which was set up in 2017, is based on the cost of the scrotum, the weight of the vehicle, the number of passengers and the amount of travel time.
In the case of the Vessas, the scotias are also available for rental or purchase.
