Amtrak will begin building a new Northeast Corridor passenger rail line from New York to Boston in 2018, the nation’s largest rail carrier announced Thursday.
The service is slated to start in 2021, and is expected to carry more than 14 million passengers annually, according to Amtrak.
The line will be the first of several expansions of the Northeast Corridor, which spans about 40 states, the District of Columbia and Guam.
The first of the new routes, from Portland, Ore., to Boston, is expected in 2019, and the next route, from Boston to New Orleans, in 2021.
Amtrak says it will spend $10 billion to improve the rail network and expand service between the Northeast and New England.
The rail line will connect Amtrak’s Portland, Maine, terminal to the new Portland International Airport.
The terminal, which opened in December, is currently the only Amtrak terminal in the United States that offers direct train service to New York City, the city where Amtrak’s current Northeast Corridor line stops.
Amtrak has also started expanding the existing Amtrak passenger rail service between Boston and New Orleans.
Amtrak will start building the new line in 2021 and open the first passenger service in 2024.
The new line is expected also to carry several new trains, including an electric commuter train and a new, diesel-powered commuter train.
It will be Amtrak’s first passenger rail system, and will be one of the largest and most complex projects undertaken by the company in decades.
Amtrak announced plans for the new network after President Donald Trump announced the creation of a $1 trillion infrastructure plan to revitalize the Northeast corridor, and after the agency released a preliminary environmental impact statement that projected the project would cost about $10.6 billion to build and operate.
The federal government will cover most of the costs of the project, but the railroad will get federal tax credits.
The Federal Transit Administration will reimburse Amtrak for the costs it will incur to operate the new rail system.
The Amtrak network includes more than 3,000 rail lines that span the country, connecting more than 50 states, Guam and the District.
The company plans to continue to operate passenger rail between Portland and New York in the coming years, according, Amtrak.
“This is an exciting and significant project, and one that will provide critical new connectivity to our communities across the Northeast,” Amtrak President and CEO Richard Anderson said in a statement.
“Our passengers will continue to benefit from increased travel options and Amtrak will continue building the Northeast’s most reliable rail service.”
Amtrak also announced the first new commuter rail service in the Northeast in nearly 20 years, which will be scheduled to begin service between Portland, Oregon, and Boston in 2019.
Amtrak and the Federal Transit Authority are in negotiations with the State of Maine over the planned commuter rail system between Portland-Portland International Airport and Boston.
Amtrak is also exploring the possibility of building a second commuter rail line between Boston-New Orleans International Airport in Louisiana and New Haven, Connecticut.
The Maine Department of Transportation said in January that it would not support a second line connecting New Orleans and New London, Connecticut, which Amtrak plans to build on its existing line.
