MEXICO CITY (AP) Mexico’s government says the country’s largest airline has shut down its fleet due to the Zika virus outbreak.
El País reports that Air Transat said on Sunday it will suspend all flights to and from Colombia for five weeks from Jan. 31 to Feb. 3.
El Paso Airlines also announced plans to suspend flights to Colombia beginning Feb. 4, citing a Zika virus scare.
El Camino Real Airlines said its flights to Bogota will also be suspended.
The Associated Press was not able to independently confirm the reports.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) said in a statement Sunday that Colombia will not be able to operate cargo planes until all passengers and crew are tested for the virus.
The virus is spreading rapidly through Central America, particularly the southern and western half of the country, and experts fear it could spread more quickly.
More than 1,600 people have died from the virus in Colombia since March.
The epidemic is spreading across much of the continent.
